Mathspace

UX Design and Evaluation

Independent Study, Fall'14 IUPUI

Description

Mathspace is a popular guided math learning program, available on both Android and iOS that promotes math learning through structured exercises with appropriate feedback. In this project, we worked closely with representatives from Mathspace to extend user engagement through gamification. Specifically, the team was asked to explore and recommend alternate user interface designs for the existing version of the app and integrate a reward mechanism based on the concept of ‘Growth Mindset’ with an aim at promoting motivated learning and more visible progress.

Conceptual Design

Several design iterations, through ideation, sketching and wireframing, were investigated with stakeholders from Mathspace to extend the current UI capabilities for enhanced feedback on learning progress and keeping track of awarded Masteries (accomplishments) and Reward Badges in conjunction with completion progress and language inspired from the ‘Growth Mindset’ theory.

Usability Testing

Test sessions were conducted with four participants where the original and the alternate UI were tested alternatively to account for the order effect. Participants were tested in a task based scenario, exploring both the current and proposed product interface in a think aloud protocol. Participant feedback was recorded via user comments and preference ratings.
